    Functional Dependencies for Object Databases: Motivation and Axiomatization

    Object identification by abstract identifiers should be considered as a modeling and not as a database concept. This means that object identifiers are not appropriate for the access to specific objects using a database language. In this paper we discuss how the relational concept of a functional dependency can be adapted to object databases in order to get more convenient ways of accessing objects. Graph based object functional dependencies are proposed as a means to specify constraints between attributes and object types of an object schema. Value based identification criteria can be defined using a special type of object functional dependencies. Different definitions of satisfaction are given for these constraints, based on a so-called validation relation, and their relationships are investigated. These definitions are related to different forms of identification. Using the strongest notion of satisfaction, inference rules for the derivation of new dependencies are discussed with emphasis on the characteristics of rules combining two dependencies, like the transitivity rule. In addition to generalized relational rules further rules are needed, mainly concerned with transition from the object type level to the attribute level and vice versa

    Powder Bed Fusion with Laser Beam of Metals (PBF-LB/M) is one of the fastest growing technology branches. More and more metallic alloys are being qualified, but processing of aluminum wrought alloys without cracks and defects is still challenging. It has already been shown that small parts with low residual porosity can be produced. However, suffering from microscopic hot cracks, the fracture behavior has been rather brittle. In this paper different combinations of temperature gradients and solidification rates are used to achieve specific solidification conditions in order to influence the resulting microstructure, as well as internal stresses. By this approach it could be shown that EN AW-2024, an aluminum-copper wrought alloy, is processable via PBF-LB/M fully dense and crack-free with outstanding material properties, exceeding those reported for commonly manufactured EN AW-2024 after T4 heat treatment

    Incommensurate and multiple-q\boldsymbol{q} magnetic misfit order in the frustrated quantum spin ladder material antlerite, Cu3_3SO4_4(OH)4_4

    In frustrated magnetic systems, the competition amongst interactions can introduce extremely high degeneracy and prevent the system from readily selecting a unique ground state. In such cases, the magnetic order is often exquisitely sensitive to the balance among the interactions, allowing tuning among novel magnetically ordered phases. In antlerite, Cu3_3SO4_4(OH)4_4, Cu2+^{2+} (S=1/2S=1/2) quantum spins populate three-leg zigzag ladders in a highly frustrated quasi-one-dimensional structural motif. We demonstrate that at zero applied field, in addition to its recently reported low-temperature phase of coupled ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic spin chains, this mineral hosts an incommensurate helical+cycloidal state, an idle-spin state, and a multiple-qq phase which is the magnetic analog of misfit crystal structures. The antiferromagnetic order on the central leg is reentrant. The high tunability of the magnetism in antlerite makes it a particularly promising platform for pursuing exotic magnetic order.Comment: 18.3 pages, 16 Figures, follow-up paper to arXiv:2203.1534

    Open Surgical versus Minimal Invasive Necrosectomy of the Pancreas-A Retrospective Multicenter Analysis of the German Pancreatitis Study Group

    Background Necrotising pancreatitis, and particularly infected necrosis, are still associated with high morbidity and mortality. Since 2011, a step-up approach with lower morbidity rates compared to initial open necrosectomy has been established. However, mortality and complication rates of this complex treatment are hardly studied thereafter. Methods The German Pancreatitis Study Group performed a multicenter, retrospective study including 220 patients with necrotising pancreatitis requiring intervention, treated at 10 hospitals in Germany between January 2008 and June 2014. Data were analysed for the primary endpoints "severe complications" and "mortality" as well as secondary endpoints including "length of hospital stay", "follow up", and predisposing or prognostic factors. Results Of all patients 13.6% were treated primarily with surgery and 86.4% underwent a step-up approach. More men (71.8%) required intervention for necrotising pancreatitis. The most frequent etiology was biliary (41.4%) followed by alcohol (29.1%). Compared to open necrosectomy, the step-up approach was associated with a lower number of severe complications (primary composite endpoint including sepsis, persistent multiorgan dysfunction syndrome (MODS) and erosion bleeding: 44.7% vs. 73.3%), lower mortality (10.5% vs. 33.3%) and lower rates of diabetes mellitus type 3c (4.7% vs. 33.3%). Low hematocrit and low blood urea nitrogen at admission as well as a history of acute pancreatitis were prognostic for less complications in necrotising pancreatitis. A combination of drainage with endoscopic necrosectomy resulted in the lowest rate of severe complications. Conclusion A step-up approach starting with minimal invasive drainage techniques and endoscopic necrosectomy results in a significant reduction of morbidity and mortality in necrotising pancreatitis compared to a primarily surgical intervention

    The same neuron may play different functional roles in the neural circuits to which it belongs. For example, neurons in the Tritonia pedal ganglia may participate in variable phases of the swim motor rhythms [1]. While such neuronal functional variability is likely to play a major role the delivery of the functionality of neural systems, it is difficult to study it in most nervous systems. We work on the pyloric rhythm network of the crustacean stomatogastric ganglion (STG) [2]. Typically network models of the STG treat neurons of the same functional type as a single model neuron (e.g. PD neurons), assuming the same conductance parameters for these neurons and implying their synchronous firing [3, 4]. However, simultaneous recording of PD neurons shows differences between the timings of spikes of these neurons. This may indicate functional variability of these neurons. Here we modelled separately the two PD neurons of the STG in a multi-neuron model of the pyloric network. Our neuron models comply with known correlations between conductance parameters of ionic currents. Our results reproduce the experimental finding of increasing spike time distance between spikes originating from the two model PD neurons during their synchronised burst phase. The PD neuron with the larger calcium conductance generates its spikes before the other PD neuron. Larger potassium conductance values in the follower neuron imply longer delays between spikes, see Fig. 17.Neuromodulators change the conductance parameters of neurons and maintain the ratios of these parameters [5]. Our results show that such changes may shift the individual contribution of two PD neurons to the PD-phase of the pyloric rhythm altering their functionality within this rhythm. Our work paves the way towards an accessible experimental and computational framework for the analysis of the mechanisms and impact of functional variability of neurons within the neural circuits to which they belong

    Spontaneous bleeding in pancreatitis treated by transcatheter arterial coil embolization: a retrospective study.

    BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: A rare, but life-threatening complication in pancreatitis is a spontaneous bleeding from intestinal vessels with or without previous formation of (pseudo-) aneurysms. And yet, the optimal diagnostic and therapeutic strategies remain unclear. METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of all patients with pancreatitis and intraabdominal bleeding at a German tertiary referral center between January 2002 and December 2012. RESULTS: Bleeding occurred in <1% (14/3,421) of patients with pancreatitis. Most involved vessels were arteria lienalis, arteria gastroduodenalis, and arteria pancreaticoduodenalis. All bleedings could be stopped by transcatheter arterial coil embolization. Recurrent bleeding after coil embolization occurred in 2/14 (14%) patients. CONCLUSIONS: In cases of intraabdominal hemorrhage in patients with pancreatitis, transcatheter arterial coil embolization should be considered as the first interventional procedure

    Inclusive groups can avoid the tragedy of the commons

    The public goods game is a famous example illustrating the tragedy of the commons (Hardin in Science 162:1243-1248, 1968). In this game cooperating individuals contribute to a pool, which in turn is distributed to all members of the group, including defectors who reap the same rewards as cooperators without having made a contribution before. The question is now, how to incentivize group members to all cooperate as it maximizes the common good. While costly punishment (Helbing et al. in New J Phys 12:083005, 2010) presents one such method, the cost of punishment still reduces the common good. The selfishness of the group members favors defectors. Here we show that including other members of the groups and sharing rewards with them can be another incentive for cooperation, avoiding the cost required for punishment. Further, we show how punishment and this form of inclusiveness interact. This work suggests that a redistribution similar to a basic income that is coupled to the economic success of the entire group could overcome the tragedy of the commons

    Identifying Scenarios in Field Data to Enable Validation of Highly Automated Driving Systems

    Scenario-based approaches for the validation of highly automated driving functions are based on the search for safety-critical characteristics of driving scenarios using software-in-the-loop simulations. This search requires information about the shape and probability of scenarios in real-world traffic. The scope of this work is to develop a method that identifies redefined logical driving scenarios in field data, so that this information can be derived subsequently. More precisely, a suitable approach is developed, implemented and validated using a traffic scenario as an example. The presented methodology is based on qualitative modelling of scenarios, which can be detected in abstracted field data. The abstraction is achieved by using universal elements of an ontology represented by a domain model. Already published approaches for such an abstraction are discussed and concretised with regard to the given application. By examining a first set of test data, it is shown that the developed method is a suitable approach for the identification of further driving scenarios.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
